Online pranks involving SWAT teams are dangerous and costly.

FACT

The rapper Lil Wayne has been swatted not once but twice—first in March 2015 and again in September 2016. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Anita Sarkeesian

Women and members of ethnic minority groups tend to get the worst treatment online. Their bullying frequently includes death threats and threats of sexual violence. One high-profile example happened in 2012, when the feminist media critic and speaker Anita Sarkeesian started a Kickstarter campaign. She planned to fund a series of YouTube videos opposing video games with misogynistic content. When her campaign was successful and she began making the videos, she was viciously bullied on social media by male, anti-feminist gamers. She received bomb threats at speaking engagements, doxing threats, and rape threats. Someone even created a video game called Beat Up Anita Sarkeesian.

Another feminist writer quit Anita Sarkeesian social media altogether after receiving threats of violence against her five-year-old daughter. In the United Kingdom, female Members of Parliament (MPs) received heavy abuse on Twitter leading up to the 2017 UK general election. Black female MP Diane Abbott received nearly half of those abusive tweets. Even taking Abbott out of the totals, black and Asian female MPs received about 35 percent more abusive tweets than white female MPs.
